Snow Trees

Where would we be without having some sort of cone tree in our holiday décor?  They're everywhere! We could easily come up with 1001 ways to decorate a cone tree.  I know I've made my share of them.  And I continue to think of more fun ways to create and decorate them.

Want to make an adorable snow tree for your lovely winter wonderland vignette using cones? Here's how:

*Gather together:
  • Posterboard
  • Scissors
  • Small cup to make scallop edges
  • Tape (I used ducktape)
  • Hot Glue
  • White Glue or Mod Podge
  • Faux Snowflakes
  • Epsom Salt
  • Dowel rod to connect cones
  • Small tree branch
  • Styrofoam (optional)
*It's very inexpensive to make since most of the items are available at the dollar tree store.
There are so many tutorials on how to make posterboard cones.  Some very easy and others not so much. For this project I wanted to keep it as simple as possible.

Draw three different half circles on posterboard, each larger than the other.

Use a small plastic cup to draw scallops on the edges.  Cut out and
gather the sides together and shape into cones. They don't have to be pointed or closed at the top for the dowel  Tape or glue edges

Coat cones with white glue or mod podge and roll in snowflakes.  Allow to dry.  Gently brush more glue onto cones and roll in Epsom salt.  Again, allow to dry.
Take a small dowel rod and insert into center of largest cone and secure with tape.  Do this for each cone adjusting placement of the cones on the rod. Once you are please with where you want the cones, mark rod spot with a pencil and remove the last two cones.  Permanently secure first cone and dowel rod with tape and hot glue.  Make sure dowel is straight when gluing.

Once the first glued cone is dry, add each cone where marked on the rod and secure with tape and glue until you have all three securely glued in place.

Put lots of hot glue on the top of and around the small branch and insert into the bottom cone,  Make sure the tree is straight. Allow to dry.  I used a small piece of oasis foam to insert the tree branch into, to hold while drying.

To decorate, I kept my tree attached to the oasis and glued it to a piece of Styrofoam board.  I placed small sheets of poly-fil over the board and sprinkled snowflakes over it. You can really have fun in how you want to decorate or use the snow tree.

You can make lots of trees to create a winter wonderland and have on display through the entire winter season. How awesome would that be!

                    Happy Holiday Crafting!
